Nel 1980 l’artista lavorò a Parigi come grafico. Fece parte del gruppo Grapus costituito da designers e grafici. Questi artisti si ispiravano alla politica e alla cultura, mostrando le loro creazioni sulla strada attraverso il linguaggio della pubblicità. Hirschhorn lasciò il Grapus per creare quelle installazioni artistiche per cui è diventato famoso oggi, usando materiali comuni come il cartone, la plastica e il nastro adesivo. Le sue installazioni sono spesso situate fuori dalle gallerie oltre che interattive.
Per la sua opera intitolata Cavemanman ha trasformato lo spazio di una galleria in una caverna usando legna, cassette e materiali comuni, e collocando vari simboli filosofici della cultura pop. Ricevette nel 2000/2001 il Premio Marcel Duchamp e il Premio Joseph Beuys nel 2004. I suoi lavori sono esposti nella collezione del Moma, del Walker Art Center, e alla Tate.
Nell’estate 2009 la sua opera Cavemanman fu ricreata per l’esibizione "Walkin in my Mind" al Hayward Gallery di Londra.
In 1980 the artist worked as a graphic designer in Paris. Grapus was part of the group consisting of designers and graphic designers. These artists were inspired by politics and culture, showing their creations on the road through the language of advertising. Hirschhorn Grapus left to create those artistic installations for which he has become famous today, using common materials such as cardboard, plastic and tape. His installations are often located outside the galleries as well as interactive. For his work entitled Cavemanman has transformed the space of a tunnel in a cave using wood, boxes and common materials, and placing various symbols of the philosophical culture. He received the award in 2000/2001 Marcel Duchamp and Joseph Beuys Award in 2004. His works are exhibited in the collection of MoMA, the Walker Art Center, and the Tate.
